PRESS RELEASE

Formation of the Mackenzie Crossing Committee

The City of Revelstoke wishes to announce the formation of the Mackenzie Crossing Committee.

The purpose of this Committee is to assist Council in making a decision concerning train whistling cessation and crossing control. The City has been working with CP Rail, local residents and tourism industry representatives, to find a solution to eliminate the train whistles in downtown Revelstoke. This has been an ongoing issue for many years for Council, as letters and petitions have been received from concerned residents and businesses in the community who feel that train whistling should be left as is, while others feel it is detrimental to their health and wellbeing, and has a negative effect on the tourism industry.

The Committee will review all the options and consider the work done to date on the crossing issues, including community input already received, and make a recommendation to Council based on what is best for the community at large, taking into account budget considerations. It is expected that the Committee will complete their deliberations and make a final report to Council by March 8, 2004.

The Mackenzie Avenue Crossing Committee members include:

  • A member of City Council - Councillor MacFarlane, Chair

  • City Public Works Department Staff - Bryant Yeomans, Superintendent of Public Works

  • Two (2) residents of Clearview Heights - George Planden, Maureen Weddell

  • One resident at large - Dan Moore

  • A representative of the Chamber of Commerce - Annie Christman

  • A representative from emergency services (fire or ambulance) - Wade Rota, Fire Chief

  • Representatives from CP Rail - Rick Poznikoff, Communications and Public Affairs, and Kevin Sali, Manager Operations (Road)

  • A representative from the Tourism Industry - Eric Scarcella

The options for consideration are as follows:

  • Option #1 – Nighttime Closure

  • Option #2 – Permanent Closure

  • Option #3 – Full Closure Protection

  • Option #4 – Do Nothing (Leave as is)

  • Option 5 – Overpass/Underpass
(The Committee removed Option #5 from the list of options due to the high capital costs.)

The next meeting is scheduled for January 21, 2004. Subsequent meetings will be held every second Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall and an Open House will be scheduled for late February to receive public input.
