The City of Revelstoke wishes to announce the formation of the Mackenzie
Crossing Committee.
The
purpose of this Committee is to assist Council in making a decision
concerning train whistling cessation and crossing control. The City has
been working with CP Rail, local residents and tourism industry
representatives, to find a solution to eliminate the train whistles in
downtown Revelstoke. This has been an ongoing issue for many years for
Council, as letters and petitions have been received from concerned
residents and businesses in the community who feel that train whistling
should be left as is, while others feel it is detrimental to their
health and wellbeing, and has a negative effect on the tourism industry.
The
Committee will review all the options and consider the work done to date
on the crossing issues, including community input already received, and
make a recommendation to Council based on what is best for the community
at large, taking into account budget considerations. It is expected that
the Committee will complete their deliberations and make a final report
to Council by March 8, 2004.
