After meetings with the City’s consultants, the Pool Committee and others,
City Council has decided to move the Indoor Pool project forward on a
schedule that will target a fall of 2004 completion. Task, the City’s
Project Manager and Vic Davies, Project Architect have been directed to
finalize the building footprint design and prepare the site for foundation
and pool tank construction in October of this year.
“City Council is satisfied
that this work can be undertaken now without any significant risk to the
project or the budget”, said Mayor Mark McKee. “In fact, Council feels
there are possible financial advantages to an early start, given the
likely short supply of construction trades next year due to the rebuilding
of homes lost to fire in the Interior this summer and expected
construction cost escalation in the new year.”
Since their engagement by
the City, Task and Vic Davies have been reviewing and revising the
previous Indoor Pool concept plans. They have presented Council with a
revised concept, which is a much simpler and more cost effective design
that enhances the pool’s features and amenities without increasing the
$5.1 million project budget. Councillor Matt Singh, Chair of the
Recreation Committee of Council, remarked “we are very impressed with the
revised design. Our architects have been able to add features such as a
tot pool, a sauna, a double lazy river, concession area and a waterslide
that were not in the previous budget. Their expertise is already paying
dividends” added Singh.
In the coming weeks, Task
and the City will put out an expression of interest directed at local
contractors, businesses and trades people who wish to participate in the
project. Tender packages will be developed in a way that will attempt to
maximize local hire and employment on the project.
Council and the consultants
will continue to work with the Pool Committee and others in the coming
months to finalize the design of other elements of the Indoor Pool
facility.
