TOURISM DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

Setting Objectives

 Community Vision
Revelstoke’s community vision, as adopted by City Council in May 1994, is as follows:

Revelstoke will be a leader in achieving a sustainable community by balancing environmental, social and economic values within a local, regional and global context.

Building on its rich heritage and natural beauty, this historic mountain community will pursue quality and excellence. Revelstoke will be seen as vibrant, healthy, clean, hospitable, resilient and forward-thinking. It will be committed to exercising its rights with respect to decisions affecting the North Columbia Mountain Region.

Community priorities include: opportunities for youth; economic growth and stability; environmental citizenship; personal safety and security; a responsible and caring social support system; a first-class education system; local access to life-long learning, spiritual and cultural values; and diverse forms of recreation.

All residents and visitors shall have access to the opportunities afforded by this community.

 Tourism Vision and Objectives
Revelstoke’s tourism vision, as agreed to by the Tourism Strategy Steering Committee in November 1996, is as follows:

Tourism Vision

To use the region’s natural and heritage resources to foster the development of tourism in Revelstoke as a viable sector of the economy in a manner which complements the scale, quality and unique features of the community; which balances the interests of tourism with the interests of other industries; and, which balances the needs of visitors with the needs of residents.

Tourism Objectives

To position Revelstoke as a four-season tourism and outdoor adventure destination and to establish a recognizable image of the community among travellers.

To encourage development and marketing initiatives which build on existing tourism strengths and are compatible with this destination focus.

To ensure that tourism development is a well-managed process, in keeping with the character and servicing abilities of the community.

To foster the creation of jobs and the generation of investment income so as to enhance the viability and sustainability of Revelstoke’s economy.

To promote cooperation and goodwill among tourism industry operators, business and economic development agencies, and local government representatives in order to facilitate the realization of these objectives and the achievement of Revelstoke’s tourism vision.

 Tourism Opportunities

As part of the Tourism Industry Assessment undertaken during 2002-03, a variety of tourism opportunities were identified. These opportunities were identified based on the unique differentiation of the specific tourism activity that provides Revelstoke with a competitive advantage in that area.
