Highlights of the November 27, 2006 City Council Meeting included the
reappointment of Councillor Frew to the Okanagan Regional Library Board
with Councillor Johnston as his alternate.
Council also passed a
motion to lobby both the federal and provincial government to provide
funding and programs to establish affordable housing initiatives,
provide rehabilitation and treatment centres for addiction, provide
supportive permanent housing for those suffering mental illness, and
provide adequate income support for the poor. A concerted action to
address these serious issues needs the support of all levels of
government to ensure these basic needs are met.
In an effort to move
forward on addressing affordable housing, the Revelstoke Affordable
Housing Vision Statement was unanimously adopted. It is important for
the City to take pro-active steps to ensure that an adequate supply of
affordable housing is available. The eight recommendations in the
Affordable Housing Strategy will be considered by the Planning Committee
and brought forward to Council in the near future.
Council also passed a
motion to apply to the British Columbia Ministry of Tourism, Sports and
the Arts indicating an interest in applying to host the 2011 Western
Canada Summer Games.
The City initiated the
Boundary Extension – Phase 2 project to include Provincial Crown lands
to accommodate the remaining build out area of the Revelstoke Mountain
Resort now outside the City’s boundaries.
Information was sent to
government ministries, other agencies, First Nations, utility companies
and rural landowners located in the Mt. Mackenzie area requesting
comments on the proposed boundary extension. Information regarding the
proposed boundary extension was advertised in the Revelstoke Times
Review and on the City’s website.
As a result of this
process and in an effort to move this project forward, the following
recommendations were unanimously supported; “That Council approve the
boundary extension area to include only the Resort Core Areas and the
Resort Neighbourhood Areas of the Revelstoke Mountain Resort as
currently proposed for rezoning, which area includes only Provincial
Crown land”. Secondly, “That Council make application to the Ministry of
Community Services to proceed with the Boundary Extension – Phase 2."
In support of Zero Crash
Month, the City of Revelstoke issued a challenge to the City of Merritt
to see which city could reduce their crash during the month of October.
The City of Revelstoke won this challenge with a 34.6% reduction
compared to the City of Merritt’s 6.5% reduction. The stakes of the
challenge was for the losing City to have to display the winner’s flag
at their City Hall. The Revelstoke flag will now be forwarded to Merritt
for them to display. Congratulations to all Revelstoke drivers!
Last but not least, snow
removal. Everyone will be happy to hear that the City and local
contractors have reached an agreement and snow removal will continue in
the same manner as Revelstokians have been accustomed to. Thanks to all
individuals for their efforts to continue to make our streets safe.
