  Mayor's Report
November 23, 2001

During the past week I have had numerous complaints about the price of gasoline in Revelstoke. Although we never get a clear unequivocal reason as to why we would pay 69.9 cents for a litre of gas when 20 miles away the price is 63.9 cents, we do forward your concerns to the gas companies. It seems this time, the media coverage has assisted and as I write this, I note that we are now paying 63.9 cents. Next time you visit your local dealer, express your concerns in this regard.

As Christmas is approaching, I want to remind you that the local Food Bank needs your support. Instead of giving a gift, perhaps you could make a donation in someone’s name.

Jack Heavenor of Downie Timber has advised that it has been necessary to close the mill for a week, perhaps two. Mill management has attempted to keep operating as long as possible under all of the market constraints but market conditions and the heavy duties imposed on sales, combined with a short supply of logs, have created a situation in which Downie must close and reduce inventory. It is always an economic blow to our community when Downie closes, for whatever reason, but we have confidence that the mill will be in full operation again soon. During this time the planer mill and Selkirk Specialty Mill will continue operation.
