The Indoor Aquatic Center is moving closer to completion and the
excitement grows. The latest contract to be let is the installation of
tile, as well as stucco work, handrails, millwork and windows. I had the
opportunity two weeks ago to go on a tour and the comment I heard on the
tour is this will be the nicest 25 metre aquatic center in the province.
We had a welcome contribution from our CUPE local in the amount of
$1001.00. The next phase of integrating our new facility into the
community is starting tonight (Wednesday) with a meeting to organize a
masters swim program it will be in the community center at 7:00 pm.
This Thursday evening at
7:00 pm will see a presentation and public meeting on The Brent Harley
report which is the study undertaken by the city and regional district
to see how the Mt Mackenzie master plan fits in with the areas concerns
and expectations on how this project will unfold. We are still waiting
word from MMRL (MT. MacKenzie Resort Ltd.) on the cities request to look
at providing a new chair lift for the 2005/2006 ski season. This is the
only condition from the city signing an agreement that would give master
plan approval from the province. The only other issue is the province's
requirement that overlapping tenure issues be dealt with. This is
something the city has supported and encouraged from the start.
The existing ski area
will see major upgrades finishing within the next two weeks. This
includes regular maintenance as well as a new cable that will see local
skiing for the community under the watchful eye of Cat Powder Skiing,
who have been offering great deals on seasons passes.
It's great to see the
expansion of Grizzly Plaza to include up to 3rd Street is making some
positive steps forward. Tom Knight is doing a good job of making
presentations to various community groups and gathering feedback.
Council has approved staff to look into funding options as well as
pursuing any grants that may be available.
This past week saw our
celebrity dream team getting royally kicked by the "Mini Hoops"
traveling basketball team. But the winners were the Hospice society who
made $1200.00 for the evenings entertainment. Well worth getting a pie
in the face for.
I greeted at city hall a
group from Canada World Youth who are working and traveling in this part
of Canada They are interesting and enthusiastic about the volunteering
they are doing with this worthwhile group. I wish them all the success
they deserve.
Don't forget the chambers
special awards night this Saturday night at the community center.
