This past week brought to light
the importance that the City puts on volunteer help with various Boards
and Commissions. I don't think anyone has sat down and calculated the
number of people that put their name forward to help make their
community a better place to live but I would think several hundred would
only be a starting point.
The reason why I bring
this up is we are always advertising and looking for people who may have
a special interest or curiosity in some facet of the community where the
City is looking for input and advice. We have recently filled vacancies
on the Economic Development Commission but we are still looking to fill
spots on my Mayor's Advisory Committee on Health Care as well as the
Advisory Planning Commission. These are two that come to mind but of
course all of the City’s Committees and Commissions are always changing
as people move on to other interests and endeavours. Running the risk of
omitting a group I would like to mention the upcoming events put on by
volunteer boards that add so much to our quality of life: The Chamber of
Commerce and its Board of Directors - on the 21st of this month its
annual awards night and auction. This group is a sounding board for
business to other levels of government as well as contracting the
tourism marketing for the City.
The weekend of October
28th sees the Revelstoke Museum and Archives and its Directors holding
one of their fundraisers which myself and my wife, Pat are hosting this
year and that is the progressive dinner. One of the highlight events of
last year thanks to Cathy English, her board, and last years organizer
Catherine Bell. This will become one of the premiere events of the year
and if you want to be part of this year’s event I suggest you get your
tickets today.
Of course there are many
more boards and non-profit groups that work hard and most, if not all of
them, are always looking for new members that want to get involved. The
Revelstoke Rotary Club is an extremely active club not only in
Revelstoke but also regionally and internationally. It has made a
commitment to wipe out polio worldwide and every year inoculates 100's
of thousands of children. It also has an international youth exchange
program that not only sees youth going from Revelstoke to all parts of
the world, but also sees them coming here from all over the world. We
are fortunate right now to have Pilar from Argentina living in our
community. The end of November will see the Rotary Club running its
highly successful and always sold out ‘Wine Tasting’ event at The
Hillcrest Hotel.
We are looking forward to
exciting times in Revelstoke and with increased development, more
people, more demands on our infrastructure and our social network, the
input and advice from all Committees, Commissions and Boards becomes
even more important.
Wondering what Board,
Committee or organization you might have an interest in, how about...
Economic Development Commission, Advisory Planning Commission, Chamber
of Commerce, Community Futures Development Corporation, Revelstoke
Community Forest Corporation, Revelstoke Community Energy Corporation.
Museums - Railway, Forestry, and City Museum. Service Clubs - Rotary,
Kinsmen, Lions, Moose, Elks; Sports groups - Ski Club, Golf Club, Rod
and Gun Club, Cross Country Ski Club, Mountain Bikers, Swimming, Rowing,
Kokanee Challenge, Snowmobile Club and Society, Flyfishing Club, Boxing
Club, Gymnastics. Cultural groups - Little Theatre, Visual Arts,
Mountain Arts, Mountain Beats and Blues. We also have Sororities and
Support Groups. The list goes on and on with the point being it is the
sum of all of the above that makes Revelstoke a unique and desirable
place to be and you can participate in just about anything you want.
