The matter of volunteers came up several times in the Council meeting of
July 24, 2006. The first was with respect to appointments to the
Heritage Advisory Commission. Council was pleased to approve the staff
recommendation to appoint Marie-Claude Asselin, Stephanie Ballendine and
Carl Rankin to this body and is confident that their input will prove
valuable in helping preserve and enhance the heritage aspects of our
community that we all value so highly. I personally would like to thank
them for being willing to give some of their time to the community.
For like minded persons,
there are a number of other City commissions and committees which from
time to time need members from the public at large. At the moment
applications to the Revelstoke Area Economic Development Commission are
invited. The role of this commission in part is to provide advice and
recommendations with respect to achieving economic growth and stability
and achieving the economic goals of diversity, local employment
opportunities, financial investment and promotion of local control and
benefits. If you think that you might have something to offer, contact
the Administration Department of the City or our Director of Economic
Development at 837-5345. If there is some other area that interests you
and you want to contribute something more to your community, City
Administration, 837-2911, can provide further information.
In keeping with Council’s
goal of staying ahead of the demands that we see coming with the Resort
Development, Council also considered an increase of the size of the
volunteer firefighter contingent and gave the go-ahead to that. The
number for that group has been at 29 for as long as most of us can
remember and it is seen as time to grow and get ready for the future. If
this is your area of interest give this some thought.
Council also considered a
couple of recommendations from the Enhancement Committee and gave the
green light to establishing six sites around the community for the
display of public art and as well, the idea of a walkway from Victoria
Road to the Public Art Gallery to improve access and exposure to the
Gallery. The input from volunteers from the art community on these
projects is invaluable.
On more down to earth
matters, Council awarded the contract for the eastern access bridge deck
rehabilitation to Seismic 2000 Construction. This project will be taking
place over the next several weeks and will result in some temporary
closures and single lane traffic. Watch for the signs and give yourself
a little extra time to get where you are going if you plan to use this
route over the next couple of months. On another road project, the
resurfacing of Airport Way which was scheduled for this summer has been
deferred for a year. With the plan now for the Resort sewer to be
connected to the city facility, a main will be constructed down Airport
Way and it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to put down a nice new road
right now. Arrow Heights residents will have to live with a bumpy road
for a while longer.
Finally, Council approved
a couple of requests relating to Railway Days that are coming up in
mid-August. The Revelstoke Museum and Archives requested the closure of
the lane behind the museum for a beer-tasting event to take place around
the museum on Saturday, August 26. Admission is limited so check at the
museum for details. Council also approved a request from the Chamber of
Commerce for a parade to be held on August 18 at 6.00 PM as part of
Railway Days. Mark it on your calendar.
Have a safe Civic Holiday
Weekend.
