The past couple of weeks have been busier than usual. Council approved a
trip for myself to visit South Korea to help promote Revelstoke’s English
language school as well as make inquiries into possible new wood markets
for local sawmills. The Canadian Embassy in Seoul reports that the two
biggest growth markets for Canada involving Korea are English language
schools as well as wood exports. I’m hopeful that this trip will result in
students and teachers coming here to learn English as well as visits from
potential wood importers to look at what Revelstoke sawmills have to offer
the Korean Market.
While I was away we
received confirmation of the 2 million dollar grant for our proposed
indoor aquatic centre. This is great news and Council is already moving
the project forward. Council has hired a consultant to kick-start the
project. They are preparing a proposal call for Architects services and
City Staff are preparing a proposal call for Project Management /
Construction Management services. Special thanks to our hard working pool
committee as well as Wendy McMahon who was instrumental in helping us
acquire this grant.
I have been receiving lots
of visits, calls, and letters in regards to Moberly Manor. Council is
concerned and not happy with how this is being handled and we will be
spending more time and effort in seeing this resolved to meet the needs of
the community. Please keep up the pressure so this can be resolved as
quickly as possible.
Coming up this weekend is
the Loggers Sports Day with lots of activities for everyone, music, food,
and entertainment. This will be a great weekend in Revelstoke. Sunday
afternoon in Queen Elizabeth Park, I will be in a saw off with our MLA.
Wendy may have been a champion in obtaining our pool grant but she is
definitely going down in this challenge.
We are awaiting final
documentation to sign an Agreement with Mount Mackenzie Resort Limited (MMRL).
This will see MMRL take over the maintenance of our ski lift, and a master
plan must be submitted to government by the end of this year with
approvals in place by the end of 2004. This agreement provides for the
installation of a replacement chairlift that will be approximately double
the length of the existing one for the 2005/2006 season. They must ensure
that skiing is uninterrupted while this is going on and I feel this shows
MMRL’s commitment to this project and the community.
Hear of anyone needing help
setting up business or relocating to Revelstoke give me a call. WE ARE
OPEN FOR BUSINESS.
