As you read this I will have already had a meeting in Ottawa with the
Minister of Transport the Honourable Lawrence Cannon. All the Mayor's
and Regional District Chairs from communities located along the Trans
Canada Highway from Cache Creek to the Alberta Border have banded
together to get the federal and provincial governments to plan and make
a long term commitment to see the Trans-Canada upgraded to a proper and
safe standard. We have asked the Provincial Minister of Transportation
for a commitment of 125 million a year for a 10 year period and he has
said he would support that if the Federal Government agreed to matching
funds.
This week will also see
the delivery of property tax notices. As was previously reported to the
public we have applied a 6.5% increase this year with the bulk of that
(5%) attributable to the cost of the indoor aquatic centre. This falls
in line with our overall tax increases towards the indoor pool of 11%
which was spread out over 3 years. The only tax increases that may come
in the future for the pool would be for operating and maintenance and of
course only if this proved to be necessary. School and other taxes, such
as the hospital and CSRD requisitions will increase by approximately
7.8% and are collected by the City on behalf of those other authorities.
A new service that we
will be seeing coming to Revelstoke is a partnership between IHA, BC
Transit, and the City of Revelstoke to provide bus service for people
needing to attend out of town medical appointments. The details are
being finalized but the plan is for the bus to leave Revelstoke and pick
up other people from communities along the way. It's nice to see
different ministries work together to fill a need and provide this much
needed service.
I would also like to let
the community know about the next step in the Mt Mackenzie Official
Community Plan (OCP) process and that is to have a public information
meeting. This meeting will take place at the Community Centre on June
5th and will be comprised of an open house from 4-7 pm as well as a
formal presentation commencing at 7:00 pm. The Revelstoke Mountain
Resort Developers will have a lot of information on the planning
processes that they have been going through. This is one of the
opportunities where the public will be able to learn more about the
proposal and be able to provide feedback to our Consultants, Council,
City staff as well as the Developers. I would strongly urge as many
people as possible to attend.
Congratulations to the
Revelstoke Theatre Company for winning 6 awards at the Kootenay Theatre
Zone Festival in Salmo last weekend. "If We Are Women" will now appear
at the Mainstage Theatre Festival in Maple Ridge from June 30th to July
9th for best production in BC. To attend something like this costs money
and if anyone would like to help out financially please contact Denny
Kaulback at 837-3687. There will also be encore performances of the play
June 7th-9th at the Mt. Mackenzie Playhouse.
