City Council's agenda was long and varied at the Monday April 14th
meeting.
Council along with City
Staff have been working for some time on the 5 Year Financial Plan. This
document sets the budget for the year 2003 along with projections for the
subsequent years to 2007. You will find in this document the budget plans
for the year, including capital projects along with each City department's
goals and objectives. Attached to this are various schedules, charts, and
documents that give background information used in planning the budget.
For the year 2003, the
proposed actual property tax increase across all property classes except
Class 2(Utilities) is 4.25% This is below the recommended increase of 5%
in the Strategic Financial Management 10 Year Capital Plan and only just
above the current rate of inflation which is close to 4%.
The 5 Year Financial Plan
is now available for your input. A limited number of copies are available
at City Hall or you can
download the document here (586KB PDF Format). Also, watch for the
City Budget newsletter for a summary of the documents. City Council is now
looking for public input on the proposed budget which has to be finalized
by May 15. You can give your input by coming to City Hall, through the
City's website, filling out the survey on the newsletter or by making a
presentation at the next two Council meetings which are on April 28 or May
12.
Another issue that Council
would like input on is the draft Environmental Strategy document. The
Revelstoke Community Environmental Strategy Committee has been working on
this for a number of months now and the recommendations are on display at
the Community Centre where you can give your input or, if you prefer, you
can again go to the City's website. Input needs to be received by April
24.
The Recreation Committee
recommended that the City award Community Sports Awards again this year.
This will be an opportunity to recognize those individuals or groups who
excel in various sporting activities. Please watch for further
announcements on how to make nominations for these awards.
On Saturday April 12 the
Revelstoke Railway Museum held a great celebration to commemorate its 10th
anniversary. The Railway Museum has now become one of our main community
assets and we should all be very proud of what has been achieved. It was
particularly appropriate that Doug Weir was recognized for all of his work
to make the museum a reality. As a part of the celebrations the Doug Weir
Theatre in the museum was designated in his honour.
It was with pleasure that
Council was introduced to and had the opportunity to welcome Sgt. Randy
Brown who will soon take over as the commanding officer at our RCMP
detachment.
Two upcoming events to take
note of are the Revelstoke Community Foundation's AGM which will be held
April 24 at 7:30pm at the Regent Hotel and, also, the Revelstoke Community
Forest Corporation will be holding its 10th anniversary celebrations on
May 3. Local media will have more information on both celebrations.
