Our City is very busy and many
issues are being dealt with. In attending and participating in meetings
with the Revelstoke Community Forest Corporation and the Revelstoke
Forest Workers Society, many challenging items are at the forefront of
all discussions. Pulp users are not taking round pulp logs (choosing to
use chips instead), differences in stumpage radius allowances between
the coast & here, new safety regulations, the high Canadian dollar and
low cedar prices are among many issues this industry locally is facing.
The Mayor and council are supporting initiatives to solve many of these
problems.
The “CENSUS’ is coming.
In May of this year we encourage all residents to complete and turn in
their census forms. Every person missed being counted costs the
Provincial Government about $2400.00 for each of the next five years and
in turn a portion of that to our City. We also rely on the census for
statistics like population counts, age distribution, industry labor
forces, family income, rental information, dwelling types, personal tax
statistics & other useful statistics. We use this information in our
decision making and our future planning. Remember all personal
information is very well protected and only general statistics are
published. This is not an invasion of privacy, but a way you can assist
your provincial and local government to receive proper funding & grow
with proper information. COUNT YOURSELF INTO CANADA, May 2006.
To help improve
communication with the public, the City of Revelstoke will be putting a
full page information advertisement in the Times-Review beginning next
month. The idea is to let people know about all events, meetings and
initiatives that the city is undertaking. By bringing the information
together in one place, we hope the information will be easier to find
and the local residents will be more aware of what is happening in the
community. The city wants you to be aware of all events & encourages the
public to participate & give us feed back on events, initiatives & other
things they are interested in.
Recycling is always a big
item on people’s minds. The CSRD is having their spring recycling fair
on April 22nd from 10 am to 3 pm. It takes place at the recycle bin
location behind the arena. They will be accepting certain types of
e-waste, paints & solvents, pesticides, batteries, some specific tires,
mixed plastics & cardboard. Recycle & keep Revelstoke clean.
Crimestoppers now have a
multi language tip taking service. This means citizens with information
can actively provide tips in their preferred language on totally secured
phones lines through a three-way conversation; them, the interpreter and
the tip taker. Call 1-800-222-TIPS. Keep our community safe and continue
to support this worthwhile organization.
Parks & Recreation
recently had a meeting with Hotel, Motel, Hostel & Campground owners
regarding the pool pass program. For a set fee these businesses may buy
pool passes from the City and give them to their customers. It has
worked very well over the past year with almost 3000 passes used and we
are told by some, that people are asking when booking rooms if passes
are included with room rates. Another way to encourage more visits to
local businesses and more dollars spent in our city.
Don't forget the Miss
Revelstoke Ambassador program pageant coming up on April 7th and 8th. 7
young ladies are competing for the honor of representing Revelstoke as
our ambassadors for the coming year. They go through a challenging
program and we wish them well. Plan to attend.
Also some fun stuff - The
Christian City Church is again putting on the EGGSTRAVAGANZA on April
15, 2006. It is a time of fun for children young and old with many
locally sponsored prizes and a long list of to do's. We'll see you there
for a great time & sincerely thank all those involved for their part in
making our community a great place to live.
