Today is Revelstoke's 103rd birthday. It hardly seems that three years
could have passed since we celebrated our centennial.
A great deal of my time in
the last month has been taken up dealing with issues around provincial
government policies. I spent two days in Richmond reviewing possible
Forest policy changes and I was asked to speak about Revelstoke's
experience dealing with economic downturn. We really do have much to be
thankful for and I notice it most when I am with Mayor's from small
communities that did not make any effort to diversify their economies and
are now in extreme difficulty.
Other issues consuming much
of Council's time, in one way or another, are Court services, health
services and related social program services as well as policing issues
and highway issues. It would be so nice to get back to dealing with the
issues that are City issues and are the reason for which Council exists.
We have held budget
meetings and are looking at a tax increase this year but it appears it
will be less than 5% so it will be on-line with the recommendations from
the citizens in our Ten Year Financial Plan. |
