Winterlude is winding down and I
would like to commend and congratulate the organizers for such an action
packed, fun filled celebration.
The indoor Aquatic Centre
is slated for a grand opening on March 5th. As of Friday, water is in
the pool and the commissioning of all equipment is taking place as well
as training of staff. I encourage everyone to come out and see this
beautiful facility and all it has to offer. I'm sure it has something
for everyone.
This past Thursday the
Regional District board approved a $20,000 grant to help develop concept
plans to upgrade the community centre. We will be applying to the 2010
Olympic Legacy Program to make the centre an attractive performing arts
centre as well as a more viable conference centre. It will integrate
better with the Aquatic Centre and become a place for the community to
gather to watch the Olympic games.
I was invited to Salmon
Arm on Wednesday to take part in a concerted effort of Mayors and
Regional District Chairs to see the Trans-Canada Highway upgraded
properly and completely by the Provincial and Federal Governments. We
don't want to see one bridge project and then be ignored for 10 years.
We want a solid commitment with adequate funding to see Cache Creek to
the Alberta border upgrading started and continued each year until
finished. Our next step is to have a meeting with Minister of
Transportation Kevin Falcon, then request a meeting with Transport
Canada. The work started by Revelstoke for A Safe Trans-Canada Highway
Committee will be invaluable in getting our message across... again!!!
At the last Council
meeting we had a few members from the Selkirk Saddle Club who are not
happy with the way the club is being run. Council for quite some time
has been working with the club trying to get them on track; insured and
on a good financial footing. The City sub-leases the land to the club
through BC Hydro. With the future of the club uncertain, Council was
reluctant to renew that lease. However, with help from City staff,
especially Alan Chell, we believe the club is on track both financially
and legally and Council has ratified to proceed with a lease renewal. We
know the club still has a ways to go and look forward to it becoming
what it is supposed to be, which is another successful recreation
resource for the community.
We have a very
preliminary plot plan on the future building of Moberly Manor as an
assisted living facility. This new facility will be built on part of the
Moberly Park and will be connected to the existing solarium. We have
requested building plans as well as layout and design from BC Housing
and will forward these to the Health Advisory Committee. I was pleased
to see Margaret McMahon coming to Council to present us with a petition
on Moberly Manor and I have requested from Interior Health, a current
status report on beds and activities at Moberly Manor. I also asked for
this to be provided on a monthly basis so we can keep the community as
informed as possible. This coming March all of Revelstoke's health
upgrades will be before the board for budget approval and hopefully
construction will take place a few months after that.
