Submitted by Councillor Peter Frew
Dan Robinson, President of Advanced
Energy Systems was present at the January 26, 2004 council meeting, to
brief council on the South Cranberry Creek Power Project. This project is
one of sixteen that BC Hydro approved and awarded 20-year Electricity
Purchase Agreements in November of 2003. Advanced Energy Systems is
currently working to develop an 8.5 MW “Green” hydroelectric facility. It
is scheduled to be in operation by September 2006, and has a construction
budget in excess of $12,000,000.00. Hopefully our local work force will
take advantage of this opportunity as Revelstoke has many experienced
workers and contractors with expertise in the construction of hydro
facilities. South Cranberry Creek is upstream from the Cranberry Reservoir
adjacent to Highway 23 South.
In the Revelstoke RCMP Police Report for
December 2003 policing priorities for 2004 were presented. The Revelstoke
Detachment has identified five priority areas through community input and
quarterly reports will be prepared to update council and the public on the
desired objectives. The priority areas are Youth, Substance Abuse, Road
Safety and Traffic, Protection of Property, and Community
Partnerships/Communication. The detachment has also added five new
Auxiliary Constables to the roster and council will meet these new members
in a badge ceremony in February.
Council approved three tenders for work
on the Aquatic Centre in the following areas, pre-finished structural
insulated panels, concrete formwork and concrete reinforcement. Work has
been awarded to Thermo Building Systems Ltd. for $88, 428.00, Maddocks
Construction Ltd. for $191,554.00 and Armada Steel Corporation for
$67,165.00 respectively. Collectively these bids have come in $35,000.00
under budget.
The CPR Advisory Committee met last week
and CPR staff advised that rail traffic has increased nationally by 4% and
is up 12% in Western Canada. This increase results in a total of 35-45
trains/day travelling through our city. In an effort to manage 30-45
pending retirements over the next few years, CPR has recently hired 28
people who are presently enrolled in a training program. For 2004 CPR
expects to increase staff levels by 28-40, which is good news for our
economy.
A reminder to all that Snowfest kicked
off last Friday, January 30/04 with a toboggan race at Mt. MacKenzie. Also
this year thanks to the Moose Lodge the Outhouse Race is back with 5 teams
entered to date. Thanks also go out to BC Hydro for sponsoring this event.
Snowfest is scheduled for two weeks, so get out and take in some of the
festivities. Information on the events can be obtained by calling the
Community Centre.
