At the January 23, 2006 Council meeting City Council was presented with
two delegations, Terry Crane representing the Rotary Club and Kevin
Lavelle, Chair of the Revelstoke Community Foundation. The Rotary Club
had committed in the past to a donation to the Aquatic Centre and Terry
Crane presented Mayor McKee with a cheque in the amount of $25,000. The
community is very fortunate to have a hard working dedicated Rotary Club
and Council appreciates their efforts and the benefits received
throughout the City. Kevin Lavelle was present to update Council on the
business of the Community Foundation which was formed in November 1998
and through community donations now has a $900,000 Endowment Fund. This
endowment is invested to generate earnings which are then granted to
qualifying organizations. In 2005 grants and scholarships totalled
$28,500 and since 1998 a total of $93,000 has been dispersed.
Due to the warmer weather
and minimal snowfall in December there has been a significant savings in
snow removal/sanding costs. The remaining budget, approximately $312,000
will be placed in the snow removal reserve for use in future years.
Council also gave early budget approval to some key public works
projects that commenced last year and will be completed in 2006. Three
of the large projects require funds to complete the design and tender
documents and once completed the work can be advertised. These three
projects include the rehabilitation of the eastern access overpass,
Grizzly Plaza extension and connection of the golf course well to the
distribution system. The combined estimated cost for these projects is
$2.75 million dollars. The Fire Department submitted its 2005 annual
report showing the volume of calls up slightly from last year, with a
reduction in the total value lost. The Revelstoke Highway Rescue Society
year end report was also received and indicated once again a busy year.
Twenty one members attended calls throughout the year. Our community is
very fortunate to have these dedicated hard working volunteers who
provide this service year round.
Council approved first
and second readings of Bylaw 1813, which will amend the Official
Community Plan for the Arrow Heights Neighbourhood. Council also
deferred third and final adoption of Bylaws 1794 and 1795 for H & J
Ready Mix Ltd. which were the subject of a public hearing held prior to
the Council meeting. A number of concerns were raised at the public
hearing and staff will need additional time to review and report back to
council.
On Tuesday February 7,
2006 the RCMP in conjunction with the City will hold a public safety
forum at the Community Centre. The intent of this session is to gather
feedback and input with respect to public safety issues in Revelstoke. A
presentation will also be made on policing in the 21st century and how
to prepare the community for Mount Mackenzie. This session starts at
7:00 pm and you are encouraged to attend and participate.
