There has been an even faster
pace at City Hall these past few weeks. By the time you read this we
will have participated in a signing ceremony in Grizzly Plaza.
This agreement is between
Revelstoke Mountain Resort and chairlift manufacturer Leitner Poma. This
agreement will see the start of what many in this community have worked
hard towards for so many years; the longest skiable vertical in North
America. Couple that with big snow and big terrain and you have the
makings of a resort and community with a very positive and enviable
future. I think it is important for us all to reflect on, and give
credit to everyone that played a role in getting us to where we are
today. That would include past Mayors, Councillors, Regional Districts,
and their staff, City Hall staff, Ministry Staff in various departments,
as well as Provincial and Federal governments. We have seen more than a
couple of sets of developers come into town and make some big promises
only to see them fizzle out. The only participant that has remained a
constant supportive force is you. This community has come out to one
public meeting after another and consistently voiced it's overwhelming
support for this project to become reality.
You may have noticed we
have had visitors here over the last few days from Japan. They are part
of the high school exchange program. I had the great fortune to visit
Ono Cho a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I
would highly recommend that anyone thinking of joining the exchange
either as a host family or as a participant, to do so, you won't regret
it.
With the title of big
snow also comes the big price tag for snow removal. We budgeted
$500,000.00 this past year and it looks like we squeaked through with
only pennies to spare. Since January 1st and starting a new budget
cycle, we are already double compared to the whole month of January last
year. We thank our Public Works staff and the contractors who assist us
for a snow removal job well done in the face of some difficult
challenges and we thank you for your co-operation, support and
understanding as they carry out this work.
