The 2013 Council Goals and Objectives required the development of a fire hydrant and streetlight replacement plan. Council has approved funding for these two plans outside of the regular Operating and Maintenance budget. Staff will be submitting the reports to Council at the February 11, 2014 Council Meeting.
In speaking to the replacement plans the Director of Engineering and Development Services, Mike Thomas stated “The completed replacement plans mark the success of a 2013 Council Objective. We plan to continue to develop a long term plan for both streetlights and fire hydrants inventory management and replacement as a part of the Asset Management Program.”
The reports outline that there are approximately 400 hydrants within the city limits of which many are over 70 years old. Staff have reviewed and identified 30 hydrants that are to be repaired or replaced. These improvements will increase fire flow capacity and add adjustments to many other hydrants to ensure compatibility with modern fire equipment for a total cost of $300,000 over the five year period.
The plan also identifies that twelve streetlights per year over a five year period will be replaced or repaired to ensure structural integrity and address safety concerns. The City estimates this streetlight replacement will cost $150,000 over the five year period.
Mayor Raven reiterated the importance of the replacement plans saying “it is our responsibility to preserve and replace the existing infrastructure within our City for future generations. These plans identify the beginning of achieving that goal.”
The streetlight and fire hydrant replacement plans achieve the 2013 Council Goal to protect the existing infrastructure with in the City of Revelstoke.
